Establishing Believers in the Christian Faith

Pray for us

If any man devoted himself to spreading the gospel and birthing new churches, it was the apostle Paul. Yet this humble servant of God regularly requested prayer from those to whom he ministered.

Paul requested prayer from the church in Colosse. The next to the last sentence of his letter he said this simple but earnest phrase: "Remember my imprisonment" (Colossians 4:18). How were they to remember his imprisonment? By not only attempting to visit him, but also praying for him.

Paul requested prayer from the church in Rome. "Now I urge you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God for me, that I may be rescued from those who are disobedient in Judea, and that my service for Jerusalem may prove acceptable to the saints; so that I may come to you in joy by the will of God and find refreshing rest in your company" (Romans 15:30–32).

Paul requested prayer from the church in Thessalonica. "Finally, brethren, pray for us that the word of the Lord will spread rapidly and be glorified, just as it did also with you; and that we will be rescued from perverse and evil men; for not all have faith (2 Thessalonians 3:1–2).

Paul requested prayer from the church of Ephesus. He said "pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak" (Ephesians 6:19–20)

There are several take-aways from these appeals for prayer by Paul, and we can summarize his requests this way.

We humbly ask you pray for us in the same way.

First, pray that we boldly speak the truth in love. The gospel is a message from God entrusted to men to share. It is to spoken seriously, reverently, and boldy. In the face of intimidation, threats, false accusations, or any form of persecution, pray we remain steadfast. This is the essence of Paul's word to Timothy, "Do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, or of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings of the gospel according to the power of God" (1 Timothy 1:8).

Second, pray that the teachings of the Christian faith we stand for find wider audience. There are many false gospels and false teachings in the world from those who are "wanting to be teachers … even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions" (1 Timothy 1:7). Pray the truths we promote and defend will find their way to the fallen so they may be saved, and to believers that they may established in the Christian faith.

Finally, pray for our protection. God's message to mankind is truly good news. But it is highly offensive to the self-righteous who are decieved about their own character. And it is also a stumbling block to devout adherants of a false religion. Just as Jesus was falsely accused, setup with trick questions, and the like, even so man's nature has not changed. Pray we are delivered from the schemes of such men.
